One of the greatest gifts we can give to others is encouragement. This is especially true of leaders who have such great opportunities to shape people.
There are naturally times that leaders need to be assertive or corrective, so it becomes all the more important to look for opportunities to build relationship in day-to-day interactions. With more texting and online conversations than ever before it is especially important to make intentional space somewhere for the purpose of relational chatting.
Also, with conflicted or tense discussions, it is especially important to follow up with a phone call, acknowledging the tough conversation that has happened but affirming the value of the person and the importance of the relationship to you.
In Acts 11:23, Barnabas encouraged the Christians in Antioch to “remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.” In times of change, uncertainty, or emotion, it is especially important for us to maintain a godly focus. While leaders need to seek encouragement to do this well, they also need to provide that encouragement to others. Whether or not we receive it, the world around us needs us to give it.
God’s people typically demonstrate great sincerity amidst their strong desire to make a difference. This is despite the many differences in our backgrounds, opinions, and perspectives. What fuels us most in our efforts to succeed is encouragement. It injects positivity into conversations that inspire us to proceed, but it also creates safety and security. Valuing people by encouraging them is not about overlooking other priorities. Rather, it frames healthy contexts that respect the uniqueness of others who are both created in God’s image and called to serve him. Who do you need to encourage today?
