Reverse Advent Calendar (RAC) turns the idea of a traditional Advent calendar on its head. Instead of opening a window each day in the lead-up to Christmas to receive a small gift, Reverse Advent Calendar shifts the focus from receiving to giving.
For 20 days in December, families, individuals, community groups, schools, and businesses place one item of non-perishable food or toiletries into a gift box each day. Once the box is full, it is donated to local food relief agencies, who distribute the items to people experiencing food insecurity.
To surround the distribution of the boxes, York St Church of Christ hosts Big Blessing Day—a day filled with free and fun activities designed to make people feel welcomed and loved in the church community.
Activities include face painting, sausage sizzles, fairy floss, popcorn, a kids’ petting zoo, balloon art, live music, a coffee cart, free fresh fruit and vegetables, the indoor playground, lolly bags, arts and crafts, icy poles, and cold drinks.
Big Blessing Day allows the church to partner with local relief agencies and personally distribute the boxes from our facilities. It has been a wonderful success for both the church and the community, with over 2,000 people attending on the day and more than 90 volunteers helping to make it possible.
